Arriving at the office

You may check in, wait for your name, and look around the office. Bringing a familiar comfort item can help the space feel less new.

You may see
A front desk, chairs, books, toys, or other families.
You may hear
Quiet conversation, phones, or office sounds.
You may feel
Curious, unsure, excited, or all three.
Helping a nervous child: Positive pre-visit pictures, tell-show-do, simple choices, comfort objects, and gradual familiarization can support many children. Ask the dental office what accommodations are available for your child. AAPD behavior-guidance source

The ADA recommends brushing twice daily for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste. Caregivers should help or supervise children as needed. Spit out toothpaste rather than swallowing it, and follow your own dentist’s advice.

A Visual Guide for Grown-Ups

How Much Fluoride Toothpaste?

Younger than 3Use a tiny smear about the size of a grain of rice.
Ages 3–6Use no more than a pea-sized amount.

Place the toothpaste on a soft, age-appropriate toothbrush. Help or supervise young children so they brush effectively and spit rather than swallow toothpaste.

Review note: This visual guide uses current AAPD and ADA recommendations. It should not be labeled dentist reviewed unless the final page has been reviewed by the licensed dentist.

Growing Smiles

Loose Teeth Are a Big Milestone

Children lose baby teeth on different schedules. A future Tooth Town update can add a tooth-loss tracker, certificate, mouth map, and Tooth Fairy letter. For now, contact the child’s dentist if a tooth became loose after an injury or is accompanied by pain, swelling, or other concerns.

Pain or Injury

When to Get Help

Call the child’s dentist promptly for tooth pain, a dental injury, facial swelling, possible infection, or bleeding that is difficult to control. Seek emergency medical care for a life-threatening situation, trouble breathing, severe facial trauma, or uncontrolled bleeding.
